On this Puppy Mill Awareness Day, we must confront a heartbreaking reality. In 2023, animal intakes reached an all-time high, with nearly 1,000,000 animals euthanized in shelters across the US. Our facility is a No-Kill shelter, but the influx of animals still presents a significant challenge.Disturbingly, for the first time ever, more dogs than cats were euthanized. An alarming 70% of puppy mills operate illegally, leading to the birth of up to 4.3 million puppies each year, with only half surviving beyond their first 12 weeks. Ohio ranks #2 on the Horrible Hundred list in America, with conditions that are nothing short of appalling.A significant number of the animals we take in come from breeders. It's crucial that we raise awareness about the horrors of puppy mills and advocate for stricter regulations and humane treatment. Together, we can fight this crisis and ensure a better future for all animals.Due to the over saturation of dogs coming from other states and counties, we are seeing lower adoptions rates within the shelters, and longer stays. What can you do to help?* Help local shelters - regardless of the county - most operate as a non-profit and all donations are appreciated.* Shelters provide a service to the community.* Beware of "rescues" - do your research on facilities.* Foster animals, donate supplies, your time, your resources - it truly takes a community.* Never support breeders.
